Ch 1

**
1993
El Paso, Texas

Dean pounded up the rise, his irritation at Sam still bubbling under the surface. He hated getting up to train at four a.m. too, but it was just another thing that needed doing and trying to run three miles on a summer afternoon in El Paso, Texas was askin’ for heat stroke. As it was, the previous day’s heat had barely dissipated overnight so sweat had darkened his t-shirt before he’d finished stretching. Dad had returned late last night and like Sam, was still asleep. This last hunt had worn out the eldest Winchester and Dean was glad his dad said they would have a few days of downtime.

Maybe they could go fishing or hunt something that didn’t want to hunt them for a change.

He heard the sound of approaching steps and it sounded like he wasn’t the only one out sweating their ass off this morning. Though the thought that it could be something other than another jogger flashed through his mind, Dean didn’t vary his course. He was armed and this last year had him filling out quite impressively for a fourteen year old. Other than the jocks that he’d thankfully left behind last week, Dean was one of the most physically fit of his age group in school. Thank God that little slice of hell was over for another two months.

The classes weren’t hard, he just got bored easily and he’d be damned if he let on that he was some geek like his little brother. If he could get away with turning in his work and then going home to do more important things he’d do it in a heartbeat. Hopefully his dad would find a job far east of here and he and Sammy wouldn’t have to start school in a city where sweating was an Olympic sport.

A flash of army green caught his attention and Dean whipped his head around to watch an impressively muscled brunette jog by. She wore a tank and camo pants in the military green his dad favored. But she looked waaaay better in them than his dad. Damn. Dean had caught a glimpse of a full mouth and firm breasts before she passed by and he turned to jog backwards to watch the muscles of her ass work; the camo not even close to disguising the fit form underneath.

“Damn.” Dean muttered and then felt something hit the back of his head. He stopped and looked down into the face of a young boy about Sammy’s age. Blue-green eyes glared at him with more hostility than Sammy had ever managed to dredge up and Dean winced inwardly as he took in the matching outfit the kid was wearing. Hell. How was he supposed to know?

Without a sound, the kid started swinging and Dean held back a laugh. Little guy was way shorter, but all arms and legs like Sam, just not as tall. All amusement fled when the little dynamo managed to sock him on the jaw. Dean whirled the kid around and held him still. Things were getting a little serious and he decided to call out to the woman when the kid started yelling.

“Let me go you asshole!” The kid shouted at him and Dean let go in surprise.

“Hey, I’m sorry dude.” He held up his hands. “What’s got your panties in a tw…” He didn’t get to finish his sentence due to getting up close and personal with the grass. Dean felt his arm twisted up behind his back and then the scent of sweaty woman filled his nostrils.

“Are you okay?”

“I’d be doin’ great if you’d let me up, ma’am.”

“I wasn’t talking to you.” She pushed him down harder as emphasis and Dean felt a shiver of apprehension. “John, are you okay?”

“He was gawking at your ass, Mom.”

“Hey! Language, buster! You’re not hurt? Did he say anything to you?”

Her voice had a low smoky quality that Dean had no choice but admire. It brought to mind things that almost two years ago he’d discovered were way more exciting than gross. Dean heard a heavy sigh from the kid and it sounded so much like Sam that he bit back a snort. She pressed down again.

On second thought, the situation really wasn’t that funny. This woman had been able to take him down quickly and Dean had already tested her grip on him. He wasn’t getting up until she let him up. And dad didn’t know where he was. Shit.

The kid’s voice sounded petulant. “No. Well, he asked me something, but you knocked him down before he finished. He was staring at your butt!”

Dean felt her lean closer and her breath brushed his ear and he squirmed. It tickled and then did other things and he felt a blush creep up his neck.

“What did you say to my son and why did you grab him?”

A cold sweat broke out on his forehead at the quiet menace in her voice. “Uh...” Dean’s voice squeaked and he cleared his throat. “I asked him what had his panties in a twist and I grabbed him cuz he kept hitting me, ma’am. Look, I coulda really hurt him if I’d wanted to. But I only stopped him from hitting me. My little brother gets his shorts twisted all the time and…” he stopped as the pressure on his back eased up and he was free to stand.

“John.”

Dean stood carefully and watched the two. The woman was standing with her arms crossed and he couldn’t tell if she was amused or pissed.

“But he was…”

“John.” She gave the kid ‘the look’, that look his dad was good at, the one that said an ass kickin’ was gonna happen if someone didn’t get themselves in line.

Dean scratched his head and cleared his throat. She turned her dark eyes on him and he swallowed loudly. “Um, I’m sorry, ma’am. I… uh... meant no disrespect and honestly, if some guy had been doin’ what I did to my m-mom, I’da probly done the same thing.” He grinned suddenly and stuck out his hand.

Maybe he could help Sammy make a friend and then hopefully the little bitch wouldn’t be so miserable this summer. Getting to look at the mother wasn’t a bad prospect either.

“I’m Dean.”

She looked at his hand for a minute and then smirked and grasped his hand in a strong grip. “Sarah; and this is my son, John.”

“Nice ta meet ya, ma’am.” The sensation of her hand in his sent a zing straight to his gut and Dean felt himself flush. He scratched his head to try and hide it. “Um, I’m takin’ my brother Sammy to the pool later. John’s welcome if he can see his way past my admiration and forgive me?”

John’s eyes lit up but the light died a quick death when Sarah answered. “Sorry, Dean, but we’re packing up, need to be ready to go first thing in the morning. Thanks for the offer, it was very sweet.”

“But, Moooom!”

Sarah pulled John along with her and Dean heard her low voice. “No, John. You know it’s not safe. You can’t draw attention to yourself and we don’t know this boy or his family. We don’t know when one of Them could show up.”

He heard the definite emphasis on the word ‘Them’ and Dean stared after the pair. She glanced back once, her dark eyes haunted and it caused a knot of worry to weigh in his stomach.

He told his dad about the woman when he got back to the house and after a brief search, they found out that Sarah and John Connor had left almost immediately. There was no sign of supernatural activity and his dad explained to Dean that there was any number of mundane reasons that Sarah Connor and her son could be in hiding.

He told his dad he understood, but there were times that Dean thought about Sarah’s haunted eyes and that knot would give a brief reappearance.
