How persistent it is, this demand that our gods be perfect. The Greeks were much more reasonable about such things.

o Leto

Three days later…

Surayya was better now. She had recovered from her fight with the Enforcer. Most of her scars had healed. The long scar on her back, where the Enforcer had sliced her open, was still there and would probably be there for quite awhile. Still, she was feeling much better. The last of the mystical energies that had transformed her body were no longer a roar but a low whisper that at times she could barely hear. However, in her head she could still feel the billions of slayers crawling about in her brain as her mystically charged mind occasionally brushed against the connection she now had with them. Without that connection, the part of the Destroyer she held in her, the part that all slayers had in them, would rise up and consumer her. Surayya was already an Old One. But, she remembered being human.

“Is this how Leto felt?” She asked herself. “Billions of lives live within me. I am a galaxy. I contain worlds.“ Surayya held her hand before her. She looked at it as she turned it over. “I am a god to all the lives that live within me. Leto had only memories. I have real time. Billions of slayers from the past and the future converge within me. We are a trinity.

Surayya pulled herself from the healing table and limped towards the opening of the sietch. Her left leg still bothered her. She placed a hand on the stone wall of the sietch opening and looked out across the desert.

The Destroyer was there. He was still wearing the body of a sandworm. His bride, Sineya, was with him. Brown dust blew off of his huge form. Surayya could see a tiny figure standing next to him. It was Buffy.

Liam walked up behind her and placed a hand on her shoulder. She saw what Surayya was looking at.

“Probably just last minute instructions.” Liam said to her. He had been on edge for the last three days as he watched over Surayya. He was glad she was well.

“Wheels within wheels” Surayya said to no one. She remembered how she had said the same thing to Buffy what seemed like a lifetime ago. Surayya suddenly turned and looked at Liam.

“So when are you taking off?” She asked. She wanted to know when he would be returning to the future.

“Ask him about the Trellian massacre.” A voice inside of her said. A faceless slayer from the future rose up in her mind.

“I’ve got to get the Bene Gesserit to help me with this.” Surayya thought. “I will not become abomination…”

“Tell me about the Trellian massacre.” She asked.

Liam looked at her oddly. How did she know about the Trellian colony? Trellian wouldn’t be colonized for another twenty years. Liam knew the limits of temporal vision. Knowing the future can be a trap.

“No matter what they tell you auntie, the future is not written in stone. We can change our fate. I am proof of that.” Liam smiled at her.

He placed an arm around her shoulder and kissed her on her forehead.

Liam thought fondly of her as she would be decades from how.

“You know, you’re a lot shorter that I remember.” Liam said to her.

Surayya looked over at the baby that was resting in the arms of one of the slayers. She looked back at Liam. She finally got that they were the same person. “I can’t wait till you’re old enough for me to start kicking your ass. I’m going to make your training my personal responsibility.” She said.

Liam smiled. “I know you will.”

Buffy had returned to the sietch. She shook the sand from her stillsuit as she entered the cave.

“What’s the game plan?” Surayya asked. She knew they had been talking about something important.

“The Destroyer is leaving soon.” Buffy said. “He said he has unfinished business.”

“A god with unfinished business. Well, that’s interesting.” Surayya said.

“The Destroyer is our spirit made flesh. We didn’t return him. We created him. For thousands of years he was in a tomb locked in the Deeper Well. I suppose that after a few thousand years he wants to go on walk about.” Buffy looked over at her son.

“We have Liam. If we really need the Destroyer, we can always find him.” Buffy said.

“Anything else?” Surayya asked.

“His name. He said the Senior Partners never knew his full name. They called him “Ta'ih Musaafir” meaning wander or traveler. His real name translates not as ‘The Traveler” but as ‘Hope travels’.”

Surayya looked out into the desert. She could see the vague shadows of the Destroyer moving under the sand. She knew then that everything was going to be alright. Surayya held Buffy’s hand. They looked at each other and smiled.

“So what are you two going to do?” Liam asked.

“We’re going to do what we’ve always done.” Surayya said.

“We’re going to create the future.” Buffy finished.

She watched the portal open and Liam walk out of it. Her son had just returned from the past. Buffy watched Liam walk over to the huge throne that occupied the center of the royal chamber and lay down his dust covered robe.

“All went well?” Buffy asked.

“Everything went as planned.” Liam said. “The time line has been corrected.”

Buffy watched him observing his body language. She knew these missions to the past left him disturbed. Around them, the royal court whispered quietly to each other. Buffy knew they were spreading new rumors about the Emperor and his strange mother.

“How is she today?” Liam asked.

“She’s having a good day. She’s lucid.” Buffy said. They both felt an undeniable sadness. Someone they both loved was in deep pain.

“I’m going to see her.” Liam said. Buffy knew better than to stop him. His love for the prisoner was undeniable.

Liam walked the five flights of stairs down to the royal sub chambers past slayer and fish speaker guards. He stood before a huge chamber thousands of square meters in area. The clear plaz and steel bars of the chamber showed the scars and damage where the prisoner had attacked her prison.

Surayya sat in the middle of the cage. Her hair was dirty and unkept. She was covered in rags. Surayya mumbled to herself and sang a low melodic song. She talked with the billions of minds in her head.

“There are some problems for which there are no answers.” Liam thought. “I will find a way to free you Surayya.”

She was the reason he had assumed the throne. She was the reason he had become the third Atreides Emperor. Even if he had to conquer and kill everything in the universe he would find a cure for the woman he loved.

“I will save you beloved.” Liam held back his tears.

Surayya suddenly looked up at him. She said the one thing she always said to him.

“You cannot contain the divine!” She screamed.

“I know.” Liam though as he turned and walked back to his golden throne.
